Marimo Moss Balls

Since the launch of the Online Shop, I have received a few messages inquiring about the Marimo Moss Balls. How do you care for them? What do you do with them? Are they actually a real thing? And honestly, what the heck are they?! Sit back because I am about to tell you why you need to add a Marimo or two to your plant collection.

So let's start with the basics. What are Marimo Moss Balls? They are indeed a real plant; of the aquatic variety. A rare form of spherical algae that can be found in some fresh water lakes in Japan, Estonia, Iceland, Scotland and Australia. In their natural habitats, they can grow anywhere from eight to twelve inches in diameter BUT this is at a rate of about five millimeters a year! Marimos can also live one hundred plus years so hopefully you aren't afraid of commitment!

Okay, so we have you intrigued, maybe you do need one (or four, we don't judge) for your collection.. What are you going to do with it once you've hit proceed with checkout? Like Tillandsia, pretty much anything! The only caveat, they do need to live in water.. You also want to be able to see them, so a clear container of some sort would be ideal. You probably have something laying around the house that will work. You can also easily integrate them into your decor - how about a nice glass apothecary jar for your bookshelf #shelfiedecor? Or even throw them in your pet betta fish's tank (he will pick at it a bit but it's okay, it's safe!) The options are endless.

Now your Marimo Moss Ball has arrived; you found the perfect container for it and it's sitting in the perfect spot in your home. It's exactly what you envisioned #satisfiedsigh. But wait, now you have to take care of this thing; what did you get yourself into?! You should change the water once every one to two weeks. I've been known to leave it as long as four weeks, only topping up the water in between, we can't always be perfect! You should also swish around the water every now and then to get the moss balls to roll around - this will assist in them keeping their coveted round shape. The other thing.. Just kidding. That's all there is to it. Marimo Moss Balls are super easy to care for so even if you have a black thumb - you should be able to manage these guys. Some even call them the new pet rock, and can you really mess that up?!

Another cool thing about Marimo Moss Balls is that they really don't require that much light. Direct sunlight will burn them so be careful not to set them too close to a window especially since the glass of the jar that they're in will just intensify the rays. They require such little light that you can keep them in a room without a window. I keep my collection in my bathroom - check out the photo below. I am the #crazyplantlady of course, so I obviously have to have a plant in every room. If you have been searching for a bathroom plant, like me, or you're just in need of a unique new plant to add to your ever-growing plant collection OR you want a pet but you struggle to even remember to feed yourself some days; Marimo Moss Balls are definitely something to consider.
